Detection
EMF meter
Electromagnetic fields spike for a hundred boring reasons. Wiring, appliances, cell towers. We carry the GQ EMF-390 anyway, and we log every reading before we decide it means anything. Most of the time it means nothing. That’s the job.
Thermal camera or infrared thermometer
Cold spots get talked about more than they get measured. We’d rather know the actual number than guess. A few degrees of drop with no source nearby is worth writing down. Anything less is just an old building doing what old buildings do. We carry the Etekcity Lasergrip 774.
Motion sensor
Something to watch the room when we can’t. Set it, walk away, check it later. It doesn’t get spooked and it doesn’t fill in gaps with imagination the way we do. We use the GardePro A3S Trail Camera.
Communication
Digital voice recorder
Most of what gets picked up is us. Breathing, footsteps, the building settling. We record anyway, because the rare thing worth hearing only shows up if the recorder was already running.
Spirit box or radio scanner
Static stitched from scanning frequencies, and people hear what they want to in it. We use the P-SB7 Spirit Box, we’re honest about what it is, and we don’t pretend a garbled syllable is a sentence.
Two-way radios
Cell service disappears before you expect it to. A radio doesn’t care about signal bars. Simple, and it means nobody’s alone in a room they can’t call out of.

Camera with manual flash control
Auto-flash misses the room half the time and blows out the other half. We shoot manual, and we shoot more frames than we think we need. The photo that matters is never the one we expected. We use the Canon EOS Rebel T7. It’s the priciest thing on this page, but a real camera earns its place when the shot has to hold up.
Night vision camcorder
For the parts of a building that don’t have windows and won’t get any light. It’s the closest thing to seeing the room the way it actually looks after the sun’s gone. We use the ORDRO Camcorder HDV-V12 HD.
Field notebook
Everything else can fail. Batteries die, cards corrupt, memory rewrites itself an hour later. A notebook doesn’t. Time, temperature, what we heard, what we didn’t. Write it down before you leave the room, not after.
Closing Thoughts
Nine things won’t make a place haunted, and they won’t make it not. What they do is give you something better than a guess. A reading, a recording, a notebook page with a timestamp.
