We stood at the edge of Mosaic Peace River Park and looked at water. Brown, slow, ordinary water. Nothing about it hints at what used to rise from the ground a mile north of here. Nothing marks the absence except a sign.
That’s the strange part about Kissengen Spring. There’s no crater. No dry basin waiting for tourists to peer into. The spring didn’t collapse or drain in some dramatic final act. According to the historical marker at Mosaic Peace River Park, it just stopped. Quietly. On February 19, 1950.



Twenty Million Gallons, Every Day
For most of its known history, Kissengen Spring pushed up to 20 million gallons of water a day from the Floridan Aquifer, according to the park’s historical marker. That output classified it as a second-magnitude spring, the kind of flow that would earn state protection today. The marker notes the pool it fed was 200 feet across and 17 feet deep at the vent, with a boil reportedly strong enough that even the best swimmers couldn’t fight down to the source.
People came for that water. Starting in the late 1800s, developers eyed the spring as a resort destination. The rail lines and trolleys never got built, but a dance floor, a dive platform, and bathhouses did. Per the marker, thousands of visitors swam, picnicked, and danced at Kissengen over more than 75 years. In the 1930s it hosted major political rallies, and Wikipedia’s account of the spring notes the Burr family had already settled nearby to farm as early as 1886. During World War II, the site served as a rest stop for soldiers stationed near Bartow.
Then the water started disappearing.

What Took It
Phosphate mining runs deep in this part of Florida. Bone Valley, the region stretching through Polk County, has supplied the industry for over a century. Mining phosphate requires pulling enormous volumes of groundwater from the aquifer, and Wikipedia dates the start of that acceleration to increased withdrawals beginning in the late 1930s. That same industry left its own mark on the landscape further north, where the gypsum stacks along the hills of FL-60 still rise over the county like leftover mountains from the same processing that dried up Kissengen.
The Floridan Aquifer feeds every spring in the region. Pull enough water out from underneath, and the pressure that pushes springs to the surface starts to fail. Kissengen’s flow thinned through the 1940s. By 1950, it stopped.
Florida had never lost a major spring before. According to Polk Forever’s history of the Peace River, Kissengen’s failure was the first event of its kind in the state, documented in a 1951 Florida Geological Survey report and cited by researchers since as the clearest known case of a spring killed by groundwater overpumping.
The damage didn’t stop at the spring itself. Without Kissengen’s steady discharge, sections of the upper Peace River lost their headwater source. Polk Forever notes that between Bartow and Fort Meade, the river’s relationship with the aquifer actually reversed in places. Instead of groundwater feeding the river, the river started leaking down into the ground through sinkholes.
Standing Where It Used to Be
The land where Kissengen Spring once drew crowds is gone in a different sense too. It sits within what became a phosphate strip mine, reclaimed by IMC Fertilizer Company in the 1970s and handed over to Polk County in 1984. Today it’s Mosaic Peace River Park, named for the company that now controls much of the industry that pulled the spring dry in the first place, a connection one local conservation group has written about directly.
A historical marker stands near the park entrance. It notes the spring’s old flow, its resort years, its wartime service. Near the bottom, in language careful enough to read like an apology that never quite arrives, it explains that the spring ceased to be a tourist destination once its groundwater was captured for other uses.
We walked the boardwalk toward where the run used to be. It’s closed now, taped off, the wood soft and dark with rot. A dead tree stands nearby, stripped down to silver branches, moss hanging off it like something left behind. The river moves past, unbothered, carrying none of the twenty million gallons that used to feed it from below.


No Way Back
Springs don’t come back once the pressure that fed them is gone. Florida has lost others since. A Chronicle Online column on the state’s disappearing springs points to White Sulfur Spring as another casualty, one that stopped flowing in 1977 for the same underlying reason: pump enough water out from underneath, and the ground stops giving it up on its own.
Kissengen Spring is a case study now. A cautionary footnote in hydrology reports. A plaque in a park named after the industry that emptied it.
The water is still down there, somewhere in the aquifer. It just doesn’t come up here anymore.
