This is the story of the St. Augustine Monster, and the century it took to explain it.
Two boys were bicycling along Anastasia Island on the evening of November 30, 1896, when they found something that shouldn’t have been there. A gray mass, half buried in the sand, bigger than anything either of them had seen wash ashore before. They thought it was a whale at first. Florida had lost whales to the beach before. This was different. This one had shape where a whale should have been smooth, and mass where a whale should have tapered off.
They rode back into town and told a local doctor. His name was DeWitt Webb, and by the next morning he was standing on the beach looking at the same thing they had seen.


The discovery
Webb founded the St. Augustine Historical Society and Institute of Science, according to the St. Augustine Historical Society, and it was his amateur curiosity that turned a strange beach find into a scientific controversy. He and his team dragged the carcass higher onto the sand with block and tackle. A dozen men could not turn it over. Whatever this thing was, it was heavy in a way that made no sense for anything anyone recognized.
Webb had a theory. He thought the mass was the remains of a giant octopus, an animal large enough, in legend, to pull ships under. He wrote to Yale.
The giant octopus theory
Professor Addison E. Verrill was one of the most respected naturalists in the country. When Webb’s letter and measurements reached him, he took the claim seriously. Per Wikipedia, Verrill first proposed the carcass might be a giant squid, then changed his position days later and declared it the remains of an entirely new species of octopus. He gave it a name. Octopus giganteus. If Verrill was right, the arms alone stretched past seventy feet. A creature like that would have made every kraken story ever told sound conservative by comparison.
Sailors had been describing something like this for centuries. Ships pulled under by arms as thick as masts. Villages that refused to fish certain waters because of what supposedly lived beneath them. The kraken was always somewhere else, in someone else’s ocean, in someone else’s story. Now there was a body on a Florida beach, and a Yale professor’s name attached to the claim that it was real.
Samples were cut from the carcass and shipped to the Smithsonian Institution in 1897. According to the Smithsonian Institution Archives, the material was formally accessioned into the National Museum’s collection under Verrill’s species name, filed away alongside the rest of the country’s scientific record. And then, for most of a century, almost nobody looked at it again.


A case gone cold
Verrill himself walked the claim back within weeks, deciding the mass was more likely the head of a sperm whale. The retraction never traveled as far as the original headline. The samples sat in storage. The story faded into local legend, repeated at dinner tables and eventually forgotten by anyone outside St. Augustine.
Decades passed before anyone tested the tissue with modern methods. A 1971 comparison leaned toward octopus. Amino acid testing in 1986 reached the same conclusion. For most of the twentieth century, the St. Augustine Monster case stayed open. A body on a beach, a Yale professor’s name on a species that might not exist, and no clean answer either way.
The DNA verdict
Testing in 1995 determined the tissue came from a warm-blooded mammal, and DNA analysis in 2004 confirmed it as whale blubber, almost certainly from a sperm whale. A century after two boys found it in the sand, the St. Augustine Monster had a final answer. Not an octopus. Not a kraken. A mass of collagenous tissue from a decomposing whale, swollen and reshaped by the sea into something that looked, for one hundred years, like it shouldn’t exist.

What it means
The science closed the file. It did not close the feeling. Somewhere between the beach in 1896 and the lab in 2004, an entire century of people looked at the same evidence and could not agree on what they were looking at. Verrill was a serious scientist. He still got it wrong, twice, in public, and the story outran the correction for a hundred years.
We think about that every time we hear about something else washing up somewhere it shouldn’t. The ocean covers most of the planet, and we have mapped almost none of the deep water. The kraken was a fisherman’s story until whalers started describing giant squid in enough detail that scientists had to take it seriously. The line between legend and biology moves slower than most people expect. Sometimes it takes a hundred years and a DNA lab to move it back.
Florida has never needed the ocean to produce something unexplained. Head inland and the state has its own version of the same story, still walking, if you believe the reports: the Skunk Ape. We don’t know what the next thing on a Florida beach will turn out to be. Neither did Webb.
